MRO Material Management Strategic Framework

SITUATION

Delivering significant savings and substantial value via KeepStock Managed—Grainger’s fee-based staff augmentation solution for MRO storeroom management—required a thorough understanding of the customer’s existing MRO policies, processes and behaviors prior to implementation.

However customer stakeholders and decision makers were hesitant to expose their facilities to such an examination without an upfront explanation of the methodology and underlying principles.

This created the need for a universally applicable, supplier-agnostic assessment framework to be shared with customers proactively as part of the KS Managed sales process.

WORK COMPLETED

I conceived, designed and authored a strategic model for evaluation of a facility’s MRO material management. The framework provided an insightful visual representation of the linear approach to MRO strategy utilized by most organizations:

  1. There is an ongoing need for MRO materials to meet facility demands.
  2. In each instance there is a desire to get the right product to the right place for the right person at the right time.
  3. To achieve these outcomes, investments are made in the form of staff, inventory and space for MRO material management.
  4. To enable more effective and efficient management efforts, additional processes, technology and supplier solutions are often implemented.
  5. Whether the desired outcomes are realized is determined by task execution related to three primary objectives—governance, fulfillment and optimization.

OUTCOME

The framework was incorporated into KeepStock Managed sales enablement materials and utilized during customer conversations to to lend credibility to the assessment process and generate trust in Grainger as a solution provider.

It also served as the basis for a wide range of content and was utilized in a variety of contexts, most notably Grainger’s first virtual tradeshow.

For 10 straight years I presented seminars at the Grainger Show—an exclusive trade show style event attended by 15,000+ customers, exhibitors and Grainger team members. However when the 2020 show was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Grainger switched to a virtual format and I presented a live webinar (viewable below) featuring the framework as a lead-in to an overview of KeepStock solutions.
